India’s merchandise trade deficit widened to USD 21.2 bn in Feb-22 from USD 17.4 bn in Jan-22. The widening was predominantly led by higher import of crude oil and gold. In the near term, easing of lockdown restrictions, progress on vaccination, and adverse commodity price effect can weigh on India’s trade deficit. Amidst uncertainty on the ongoing geopolitical crisis, we revise upwards our forecast for India’s FY22 current account deficit to USD 52 bn from USD 48 bn earlier
